Lip Flip
A “Lip Flip” is an innovative treatment designed to create a more noticeable pout or softening in the lips using careful injections of neurotoxin, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, or Jeuveau™. This subtle augmentation can relax specific muscles in the orbicularis oris—a group of muscles that encircle the mouth—to make the lips appear fuller, allowing the lip line to flip out and rolling the lip gently outward. Therefore, more of the lip’s red body is visible and less concealed by smiling or facial expressions. Considered a relatively fast non-surgical cosmetic treatment, our plastic surgeon offers the Lip Flip technique at our Minneapolis-area practice for patients who wish to achieve a fuller lip shape without filler, surgery, or downtime.
How Does a Lip Flip Work?
Using meticulous cosmetic injections, a Lip Flip combines a carefully balanced blend of substances to relax the muscle, allowing the lip to naturally roll outward. This can give patients a “poutier” lip appearance, with the best results often seen with expression. As a highly popular procedure, cosmetic injections using neurotoxin work to temporarily prevent contraction of facial muscles— typically, for the purpose of smoothing wrinkles and expression lines. When used to target the superficial layers of the upper and lower lip muscles, the product will yield a natural projection of the lips that provides the illusion of fullness without affecting function. This technique can also help to soften the fine lines above the upper lip, called “smoker’s lines,” as well as reduce a gummy smile.
Injecting a very precise amount of injectable neurotoxin into the appropriate lip muscles is critical to achieving a successful result. For this reason, it is essential to ensure an experienced injector is performing your Lip Flip treatment.
Lip Flip vs. Dermal Fillers
Simply put, the Lip Flip technique is designed to make the lips appear more voluminous without actually adding volume. In contrast, dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, or BELOTERO BALANCE® all utilize a hyaluronic acid to add direct volume to the area desired. When a Lip Flip is combined with dermal fillers, patients can maximize the benefits of non-surgical lip augmentation and achieve a comprehensive improvement in their lip aesthetic. Dr. Joe can examine your concerns and help you determine the best treatment plan for your goals. For the best results, most patients who add filler to their lips will want to undergo a Lip Flip as well.
What is a Lip Flip Treatment Like?
A Lip Flip is performed in our treatment rooms at Gryskiewicz Twin Cities Cosmetic Surgery. During treatment, we will carefully inject small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic or another injectable neurotoxin into the superficial muscle fibers surrounding the upper and/or lower lips. You may opt to use numbing cream, as there will be two to six entry points accessed with a 33g needle. The process generally only lasts a few minutes, allowing patients to return to their daily routines shortly after.
How Long Does a Lip Flip Last?
After the injections, you should notice the results within 14 days after the treatment and effects may begin as early as two days. The effects of a Lip Flip usually two to six months before touch-up treatments may be necessary. Due to the continual movement of the mouth, injectable neurotoxin in the lips may not be as enduring as injections in other parts of the face, such as the forehead. If fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA, are used in conjunction with injectable neurotoxin, the longevity of your lip rejuvenation may last even longer.
How Much Does a Lip Flip Cost?
Since a Lip Flip only requires a minimal amount of product to achieve the desired effect, the cost of treatment is generally more affordable than other injectable procedures. It typically requires two to eight units per patient. Your personalized treatment plan cannot be assessed until we evaluate your needs in person. The fee for the lip flip treatment is $150. At Gryskiewicz Twin Cities Cosmetic Surgery, we accept plastic surgery financing from CareCredit® and ALPHAEON™ Credit, which can both provide low- to no-interest payment plans to accommodate virtually any budget. Once approved, qualified patients can simply select the best short- or long-term financial plan for their unique needs, allowing payment to proceed in smaller installments rather than a lump sum.
