What Causes Breasts to Look Aged?
April 23, 2024
The loss of firm, youthful breasts can be a universal experience for women as they age. Often caused by menopause and the natural decline of collagen production in the body, the breasts often change shape over time due to:
- Depleted breast volume: A gradual reduction in breast volume usually results from a number of factors, including pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and breastfeeding. Depleted volume is typically accompanied by a loss in shape, which can both cause the breasts to soften and look aged.
- Wider space between the breasts: As women get older, the natural distance between the breasts becomes wider, often reducing visible cleavage. Not only can less cleavage emphasize aging breasts, but it also usually doesn’t allow the best fit in certain types of clothing.
- Increased skin and tissue inelasticity: With less collagen production comes increased laxity in the skin and breast tissue. This generally causes the breasts to stretch and elongate, which may or may not lead to stretch marks.
- Ptosis, or breast sagging: Breast sag is one of the most common concerns patients have when they notice their breasts starting to change, particularly after menopause. As the breasts migrate from their youthful positioning on the chest wall, the lower portion of the breast may droop beyond the breast crease and cause the nipples to point downward.
Losing your youthful breast contours can be distressing, but you don’t have to live with age-related changes in the breasts forever. At Gryskiewicz Twin Cities Cosmetic Surgery, Minneapolis plastic surgeon Joe Gryskiewicz, MD offers some of the most innovative breast rejuvenation options available, including Quick Recovery®, dual-plane breast augmentation, and breast lift surgery, among other advanced procedures. Based on your needs and what you hope to accomplish, breast implants and mastopexy techniques can be utilized to restore volume, symmetry, “perkiness,” and shape — all with the goal of creating the custom breast contours you desire.
