How to get firmer breasts – Surgical Solutions for deflated breasts
January 6, 2023
Written By Joe Gryskiewicz, MD, FACS
Many women get deflated or softer floppy breasts as part of life. This condition is normal, as breasts can change like any other part of the body, especially as we age, post pregnancy or after large weight changes. If your breasts are sitting lower on your chest, your nipples point are downwards or the top of your breast is not as full as it used to be, breast surgery can help.
Minnesota Plastic Surgeon Dr Joe Gryskiewicz have extensive breast surgery experience and can make your breasts look as firm as they used to be when you were younger.
What Causes Deflated Breasts?
With age, your breast skin becomes less firm. Moreover, the ligaments can no longer hold up the breasts’ weight. Gravity does its job at pulling the breasts downward too. It doesn’t matter the size of the breast. Breasts of all sizes can start sagging with age or for other reasons such as breastfeeding. However, larger and heavier breasts tend to lose their firmness earlier than small breasts. Weight gain, pregnancy, weight loss, and hormone changes are all causes of deflated & sagging breasts. In addition to losing breast fat, your breast tissue can change over time, so its volume can be reduced considerably, especially during menopause.
It’s important to know that a plastic surgeon can help you regain the firmness, shape and volume of your breasts by performing one of these three procedures.
Surgical Procedures that can help you get firmer breasts:
1. Breast Augmentation for Firmer Breasts
Breast augmentation is a popular procedure during which your surgeon increases your breasts’ size by placing breast implants under your chest muscles or breast tissue.
How Is the Breast Augmentation Procedure Performed?
To insert the implants, your surgeon will need to do an incision in your skin. The incision can be done in your axillary region (armpit), around the nipple or in the crease that forms under your breasts (your IMF or inframammary fold). After making the incision, your surgeon makes a pocket to contain the implants. Then, your surgeon will insert your specially selected implant to give you the best size, shape and breast contour. Your surgeon will close the incisions as soon as the implants are in place.
What to Expect after the Breast Augmentation Procedure?
Your surgeon might perform your breast augmentation at a hospital outpatient facility or surgical center. You can usually go home the same day. Since breast augmentation is performed while you are under general anesthesia, you might feel dizzy or tired after the procedure. Your breasts may be swollen and sore for a few weeks. You might also have some bruising. While your scars will fade in time, they won’t be gone forever. Scar minimization treatments can help make scars be less visible, as can an underarm incision. Your surgeon will recommend what to wear after your surgery which will help speed up healing and offer your breasts the support they need.
2. Mastopexy Surgery – A Breast Lift without Implants for Firmer Breasts
If your breasts have sufficient volume, you can opt for a breast lift without implants. Another name for this procedure is mastopexy and it can help shape your breasts and cause them to appear fuller and firmer. Having fuller breasts can help increase your self-confidence. Note that your surgeon might not perform a breast lift without implants if your breasts don’t have sufficient volume. In this situation, your surgeon might recommend combining implants with your breast lift surgery to deliver the best possible results. Your surgeon will examine your breasts and determine if you are suitable for a mastopexy. Please explain to your surgeon in detail what you desire from the surgery.
How Is the Breast Lift without Implants Procedure Performed?
During the breast lift surgery, your surgeon will elevate your breasts and remove any excess skin. The goal of the surgery is to deliver perkier breasts that are on the correct anatomical position on the chest wall. Your surgeon will make smaller or bigger incisions, depending on the initial condition of your breasts. The aim is hiding the incisions where they are less likely to be seen. Mastopexy repositions the nipples. Your nipple size may also be adjusted if you want. After the surgeon removes the excess skin, your breasts will have a more natural shape. You should expect some scarring after the surgery. Your current breast shape will determine which breast lift incision is more suitable for you. The procedure requires general anesthesia.
What to Expect After a Breast Lift
The breast lift with or without implants is a same-day procedure. Compression dressings are necessary to help reduce swelling and bruising and speed up recovery. When it comes to the activities you can perform after a mastopexy, you can usually return to work a few days after the surgery. You can hit the gym after three weeks.
Are There Any Risks Associated with the Breast Lift without Implants Surgery?
There can be risks. To begin with, expect to have scars – these are a normal occurrence after any surgical intervention. The good news is that the scars will heal with time, and they can be barely visible after the healing process is complete. We make scar therapy recommendations to fit each patient. One of the risks associated with a breast lift without implant surgery is a potential change in the sensation of your breasts or nipples. Note that these changes could be temporary or permanent. Before deciding to get a breast lift without implant surgery, ask your surgeon about all the risks this procedure involves. Then, knowing the risks, you can determine if it’s good for you to have the surgery or not.
3. Breast Lift with Implants for Firmer Upper Breasts
This surgery is customizable for the type of breast implants and surgical approach. The most suitable surgical option is decided after the consultation and based on your needs and desires and taking into consideration your preoperative breasts’ shape and size. Before surgery, you will receive information about what the procedure involves, its risks, and what you should and should not do after the surgery. You decide with your surgeon whether you want a lift, either with or without implants.
How Is the Breast Lift with Implants Surgery Performed?
For the surgery, you will be under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon will make incisions on the breasts either around the areola or in the inframammary fold. The incision will follow the contours of the breasts. The next step is for the surgeon to create a pocket under the pectoral muscles or the glandular tissue to insert the implants. After the implants are inserted, the excess skin is eliminated, and the surgeon will use stitches and surgical tape to seal the incisions.
What to Expect after the Breast Lift with Implants Surgery
After your breast lift with implants surgery you should expect to feel tired because of the anesthesia. Your surgeon might ask you to wear a special bra or bandage to help your breasts heal faster.
Your surgeon will instruct you how to shower and care for your breasts. You will also receive information and what medicines to use and what you should do to help the incisions heal faster.
Who is suitable for Surgery to Get Firmer Breasts?
Know that your surgeon won’t operate on you if you’re not healthy, you smoke, or you’re not psychologically prepared for this type of surgical procedure and what it entails. The decision to choose surgery to get firmer breasts should be decided by you. Don’t opt to get surgery for firmer breasts just because someone else suggested you need it.
