What are the Most Common Breast Implant Complications?
While they’re not meant to be lifetime devices, breast implants can provide beautiful and natural-looking results that last many decades. Many women go through their entire lives without having an issue with their saline and silicone implants. On the other hand, some patients may notice changes in the look and/or feel of their breasts over the years. The most common implant complications are often immediately visible, but may also arise “silently” without any indication of a problem. Potential issues may include:
- Rippling: Implant rippling occurs when the edges of the implant are seen or felt through the skin, interfering with a natural-looking result. Though it doesn’t require emergency medical attention, rippling can be unfavorable or bothersome from an aesthetic standpoint.
- Rupture: Known as a pinhole tear or rip in the implant, rupture is exceedingly rare. However, it’s important to be aware of potential signs of rupture and undergo periodic physical exams to help ensure your implants are still in good condition. If you’re concerned about a rupture in your silicone implants, our team can use the Clarius® ultrasound device to evaluate the shell of the implant for you.
- Hardened scar tissue: While scar tissue development is expected to some extent after breast augmentation, “capsular contracture” refers to the formation of a hard, tight, or painful scar capsule.
- Malposition: Implant malposition is observed when breast implants sit too high or too low from the correct positioning. This can occur over time and is usually more likely with larger implants.
Luckily, these complications can typically be corrected with a secondary breast revision procedure to soften the breast contours, replace ruptured implants, remove problematic scar tissue, or address other issues affecting your breast implants.
